The Winnicott Foundation aims to support families through the difficult days, weeks and months in a neonatal unit, and afterwards. Support is available to families with a baby in the Winnicott Baby Unit or Queen Charlotte’s Neonatal Unit, and after they have left.
Winnicott Baby Unit:
Travel and Accommodation costs:
If your baby/babies have been transferred from another hospital, or you are experiencing financial difficulties, we may be able to help you with travel costs or in some cases short-term hotel accommodation.
Books and Information:
The Winnicott Foundation buys books and DVDs for parents to borrow. These are in the parent room, by the seating area in reception and available from the developmental care team.
Parent Rooms:
The parents’ rooms, refurbished by the Winnicott Foundation, provide 2 double bedrooms, a PC with internet access, a TV and DVD player, kitchenette and toys and magazines.
Breastfeeding support:
All mothers expressing their milk should receive a free hand breast pump for use at home, provided by the Winnicott Foundation.
Welcome bags:
New families will receive a Welcome Bag from the Winnicott Foundation – a cool bag containing a hooded towel, book and pen, and information on the charity.
Sibling packs:
Colouring packs are available for young children coming to the unit to see their brother or sister.
Support group:
A parent support group is held every Tuesday, at 11am, run by Helen Avila, Family Liaison Nurse and Pippa Jones, parent of a Winnicott baby.
Tuesday Club:
A weekly drop-in baby massage group is held for families who have left the unit. Run by Cherry Bond, a Certified Infant Massage Instructor, the group is held in the Parent Education Centre on South Wharf Road from 12pm to 2pm every Tuesday. As well as baby massage, there is the opportunity to meet up with other Winnicott parents.
