The Winnicott Foundation has just bought 3 sets of cooling equipment for the neonatal units at St Mary’s and Queen Charlotte’s Hospitals!

This exciting equiment, which includes a whole body wrap and a brain function monitor, is used to reduce the core temperature of babies who have experienced oxygen deprivation at birth. The effect of oxygen deprivation is life long – from mild learning difficulties through to severe disability. This treatment has been shown to prevent brain damage in up to 40% of babies cooled.

Researchers at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital and Imperial College have been involved in the development of the equipment and treatment. Queen Charlotte’s and St Mary’s are cooling centres for babies from across and out of London, often caring for babies transferred in for this specialist care.

The Winnicott Foundation is delighted to be able to support the treatment of more babies by buying equipment from funds raised at our ball in March as well as from the family of a baby who benefitted from cooling.

Thank you for your support.

Thank you to our runners in the London and Brighton Marathons for their fantastic achievements; as well as months of training they have been fundraising for the Winnicott Foundation.

Luke Johnson, from Virgin, has raised nearly £8,000 to date through donations and various fundraising activities that he has orgaanised. Luke told us:

"Yesterday was fantastic. I had an absolutely brilliant time, though admittedly there were some incredibly hard parts to the course. Despite the pain encountered in parts, I managed to beat my target time of 3:45 and came in at 3:35! I’m incredibly pleased and I’m still beaming from the endorphins."

Ewan West, whose son was cared for in the Winnicott Baby Unit at St Mary's, has raised over £2,600, said:

"I would certainly recommend the experience, particularly when you can be inspired by knowing that you are running for a good cause. I have been very touched by the generosity of all those who have sponsored me and added words of encouragement".

You can still sponsor our runners:
