International Kangaroo Care Awareness WeeksNovember 6, 2017 12:37 pm
To celebrate Kangaroo Care Awareness Day, St Mary’s and Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital held a Kangaroo-a-thon Challenge between 1st May and 15th May!
This year, the units entered the Kangaroo Care competition alongside other neonatal units around the world. Three other units joined in the challenge – Leeds, Glasgow and Birmingham.
It was great to raise the profile of skin-to-skin using an international challenge. The fortnight was very busy – encouraging parents to get involved in lots of skin-to-skin time, group parent teaching sessions about Kangaroo Care, badges and quizzes for staff. All staff were very enthusiastic and supportive in facilitating skin-to-skin time with parents.
Recording Kangaroo-a-thon hours
Parents and staff recorded their hours on the Kangaroo-meter which was kept next to the cotside.
And the results are…
St Mary’s Hospital:
7 families (out of 9 eligible families) were involved. Over 14 days, the total number of skin-to-skin hours was 350 hours.
Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital:
11 families (out of 12 eligible families) were involved. Over 14 days, the total number of skin-to-skin hours was 340 hours.
Congratulations to all the parents and staff on an incredible number of skin-to-skin hours!
