baby unit

The Winnicott baby unit uses a lot of expensive medical equipment to monitor and treat the babies we look after. We sometimes run out of certain items, or need to replace older models with the latest up to date version.

Below is a list of the current items we would like to have on the unit.

Kanmed BW50 water mattress. £ 1800.00
We already have three of these units which enable us to keep babies warm without the need to put them in an incubator. We often need to lend them out to other wards in the hospital, so do not have enough of our own.

Viasys SIPAP, nasal respiratory support. £ 5427.00
We already have two of these machines on the unit, which we use constantly to provide respiratory support via some small soft prongs inserted into the babies' nose.

Synectics pH Digitrapper £ 4,300.00
This specialised piece of equipment allows us to measure the pH in the babies’ stomach over a 24 hour period, and record the results onto a PC. The old one we had no longer works, so we cannot do these studies any more.

SLE 500 ventilator £ 22,000.00
This is the latest software driven neonatal ventilator. It has all the latest modes of ventilation installed, and can be upgraded when new modes are introduced. It could replace some of our oldest ventilators.

Algo Newborn hearing screener, Natus Neonatal LTD. £11,000
This device will allow us to test a baby's hearing at a very early stage.

Bristol Maid elevating cot £ 1550 each
At present we only have 4 elevating cots. We would like to replace all of the old ones with an elevating type. This will allow for easier access to the baby, and will meet current health and safety rules for lifting. It will mean less strain on the nurses backs!

Timeter Low flow Oxygen flowmeter £180.00
This allows us to accurately deliver very small amounts of Oxygen to the baby via a small cannula inserted into the nose. Some babies will go home with low flow Oxygen.

Neoblue mini phototherapy unit £1,500.00
The phototherapy unit is a high intensity light source used to treat jaundice in premature babies. This particular model has a narrow beam which means that staff and parents nearby are not exposed to lots of extraneous light. They can easily be clamped onto the Giraffe, and do not have a wheeled stand to get in the way.

Other items:

And every day we have many other needs that help to make a difference to babies and parents

£4 - will buy a specialist dummy to provide comfort for a tiny premature baby.

£10 - will buy a “nest” for a tiny baby so that he or she feels comfortable and warm, or a gel pillow for safe, comfortable head support in the incubator.

£12 - will buy a specially made soft wrapover top to keep a tiny baby in intensive care warm and pretty.

£70 - will pay for a mother and father to stay in a hotel near to the hospital so that they can be close to their baby when he or she is ill.

£100 - will help to provide training for medical staff in the latest neonatal techniques

£250 - will buy a comfy chair for a mum or dad to sit in next to their baby’s cot.

£350 - will buy books we can lend to mothers and fathers so that they understand what is happening to their baby.
